The Horse
A Medicine Hat in More Than MarkingChief Blue Streak is a blue-eyed red dun medicine hat — one of the rarest color expressions in the Colonial Spanish Horse, and among the rarest combinations of marking and eye color in any breed. The medicine hat pattern, a cap of color over an otherwise white coat, carried deep meaning to the Plains and Southeastern tribes who bred and kept these horses. A horse marked this way was believed to carry a protective power, to stand between his people and harm. Blue earns the designation in ways that go beyond color. The medicine runs strong with this one. He knows when gentleness is the work. He is, by every measure, a saint among stallions. Gentle with mares, gentle with people, calm in the presence of anxiety and noise. When S.A. was pregnant, Blue adjusted without being asked — quieter at the fence, careful about where he moved, present but unhurried. Our daughter’s first rides were on him: a baby sitting in front of her mother, then in front of her father, on a stallion who seemed to understand the weight of what was being trusted to him. He carried her safely every time. He is backed and mannerly under saddle — not a performance horse, not a trail horse by vocation, but a horse that accepts work without argument and returns to his role as the farm’s anchor when it’s done. At the fence and in the field, he is what every stud owner hopes to find and rarely does: a breeding stallion with the disposition of a schoolmaster.

Bloodlines
The Swinging J’sBlue’s lineage carries two of the most significant bloodline threads in the Colonial Spanish Horse world. Through his sire’s dam line — Swinging J’s Going Streak and Swinging J’s Red Streak — he descends from the Whitmire family’s Cherokee Indian Ponies, a band kept on the same range and carrying the same brand for over 146 years. These are Jewel Whitmire’s horses: a foundation of pure Cherokee blood brought across the Trail of Tears from Echota, Georgia, and stewarded through generations to the present. The Swinging J mark on the right shoulder was their signature, and their offspring are among the rarest of the rare in the registry today. His dam side carries Choctaw blood through Black Camp and King of Choctaws, tracing back to the original band of Choctaw horses that Gilbert Jones of Finley, Oklahoma kept — horses Jewel Whitmire herself described as among the best of the kind. The Choctaw and Cherokee lines complement each other in Blue: both small, tough, deep-boned strains with a particular way of covering ground and a hardiness bred into them across centuries of open range.

Role in the Program
Foundation StudBlue is the genetic cornerstone of Tree of Life Hollow. His combination of Choctaw, Cherokee, and Swinging J’s blood — overlaid on a medicine hat frame with blue eyes — represents a confluence that is genuinely difficult to replicate. The SSMA registry is not large, and the bloodlines he carries are among the most endangered within it. Every foal he produces is a preservation act. He is currently paired with Tabac Rouge, with whom he produced TLH Blue Streak’s Tobacco Rose in the spring of 2024. The reunion of that pairing is intentional: the cross worked, and we intend to learn from it further. His previous pairing with Etta produced Rapha, our first farm-born foal, who did not survive his first day. Rapha’s loss — and the LWO testing that followed — confirmed that Blue is an LWO carrier, as is Etta. That knowledge now shapes every pairing decision on the farm. He is what this breed is supposed to be — useful, gentle, rare, and rooted in something real. Blue is available for outside breeding on a limited, application basis. We are thoughtful about where his genetics go — mares are evaluated individually, and we prioritize pairings that serve conservation goals. If you are working with Colonial Spanish Horses and believe Blue is the right cross for your mare, we want to hear from you. |
What It Means to Carry Swinging J’s Blood
The Whitmire family of Gilbert, Oklahoma kept the same strain of Cherokee Indian Ponies for 146 years — the same range, the same brand, the same blood. Their lineage traces to Chief Old Tassell’s ponies, documented to 1775, and to the Corntassell family who brought horses across the Trail of Tears from Echota, Georgia to Indian Territory in 1835. Jewel Whitmire wrote that if a horse carried the Swinging J brand on the right shoulder, “they are as good as the best and better than the rest.”
Blue carries that line. The SSMA registry contains very few horses that can make that claim today. The Whitmire program, now stewarded by the Rickman Spanish Mustang operation, has continued the breeding with emphasis on keeping Cherokee blood as high a percentage as possible — crossing only with Choctaw when necessary. Blue’s bloodlines sit at that exact intersection, and in breeding him we are participating in a preservation effort that stretches back across two centuries of American horsemanship.
